Chlorinated hydrocarbon residues in perianal fat of desert bighorn sheep.
نویسنده
چکیده
Use of chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticides for more than 30 years and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) for more than 40 years has resulted in the accumulation of these compounds in various ecosystems. Their accumulation in different ecosystems both near and well removed from their source of application is enhanced principally by their persistence and subsequent magnification between trophic levels. Particularly noted for their residual properties are DDT and dieldrin as they can remain in their original state in the soil or be converted to various breakdown products. Photodecomposition of dieldrin results in products more toxic than the parent compound (SOTO and DIEC~V~N 1967:307).

Fifty years after Welles and Welles: distribution and genetic structure of desert bighorn sheep in Death Valley National Park
The status of desert bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis nelsoni) populations in the mountains around Death Valley was first evaluated in 1938, shortly after designation of Death Valley National Monument. However, the most comprehensive evaluation of bighorn sheep in the region was conducted by Ralph and Florence Welles during 1955-1961. They documented patterns of use at water sources and other foc...
متن کاملDetection of bacterial-reactive natural IgM antibodies in desert bighorn sheep populations
Ecoimmunology is a burgeoning field of ecology which studies immune responses in wildlife by utilizing general immune assays such as the detection of natural antibody. Unlike adaptive antibodies, natural antibodies are important in innate immune responses and often recognized conserved epitopes present in pathogens. Here, we describe a procedure for measuring natural antibodies reactive to bact...
متن کاملLocal Extinction and Unintentional Rewilding of Bighorn Sheep (Ovis canadensis) on a Desert Island
Bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) were not known to live on Tiburón Island, the largest island in the Gulf of California and Mexico, prior to the surprisingly successful introduction of 20 individuals as a conservation measure in 1975. Today, a stable island population of ∼500 sheep supports limited big game hunting and restocking of depleted areas on the Mexican mainland. We discovered fossil du...
متن کاملCause Specific Mortality of Desert Bighorn Sheep Lambs in the Fra Cristobal Mountains, New Mexico, Usa
Bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) herds have suffered recent declines across their previous range, and desert bighorn sheep (O. c. mexicana) are listed as an endangered species in New Mexico. One factor affecting growth rates of these populations is low and variable lamb recruitment. Capturing and radio-collaring lambs can provide opportunities for collecting valuable information on factors poten...
متن کاملPotential Foraging Decisions by a Desert Ungulate to Balance Water and Nutrient Intake in a Water-Stressed Environment.
Arid climates have unpredictable precipitation patterns, and wildlife managers often provide supplemental water to help desert ungulates endure the hottest, driest periods. When surface water is unavailable, the only source of water for ungulates comes from the forage they consume, and they must make resourceful foraging decisions to meet their requirements. We compared two desert bighorn sheep...
